The brand new Spine Road connecting Pan Lane to St George’s Way in Newport has now opened to the public.
Following what has been months of development and disruption in the area, the road off the new Asda roundabout now connects with Pan Lane. Eventually the carriageway will continue and join up with Bluebell Meadows housing estate.
The first public vehicle to roll down the carriageway on Friday afternoon was a classic Ford Model T van in ‘Fowlers’ livery.
Asda’s multi-million pound investment on the Island has meant a new 3-lane roundabout has been built between Coppins Bridge and Shide. As well as acting as a connecting road to Pan Lane, the Spine Road off this roundabout will allow buses to access a special turning head outside the new Asda store, which is set to open on 21st August.
The opening of the new road means that half of Pan Lane has been made no-through access. Although traffic is still able to use Pan Lane from the Burnt House Lane end, the road leads to a dead end.
Local business Prices Garage is celebrating the opening of the Spine Road as the garage is now fully accessible from both directions.
