Work is due to start next week on a series of improvements to car parking facilities in the heart of Newport.
Short stay car parks in New Street and Chapel Street will be resurfaced and re-lined to create a total of 212 parking bays — a net increase of 6 spaces — as part of the Isle of Wight Council scheme.
The council’s contractor, Island Roads, is due to start work on 10th December, although this will be subject to weather conditions.
The scheme will be carried out over 6 nights to ensure daytime parking is retained at this important town centre location.
Railings, which once separated the 2 car parks, have already been removed to create a larger, combined car park with a simplified layout which is both clearer and easier for motorists to follow.
The scheme also involves permanently closing off access from Chapel Street in response to complaints the entrance is difficult to negotiate.
Following the completion of the works, motorists will enter and leave the car park via New Street only. 2 on-street parking spaces will be removed to improve visibility at this access point.
The work is part of a programme of car park resurfacing that is continuing to take place across the Island.
Brilliant idea, block the car parks during the run up to Christmas when, just possibly, people might want to go shopping. Where do they find these brains?

A big improvement would be to reduce the price
They’ve just finished the car park in Yaverland which is more important than the road in to the car park which is full of potholes, idiots
Nobody can understand the Yaverland scheme where the adjacent main road is one of the worst on the island. Another main road falling apart is York Avenue near Osborne house.
Are they going to make the disabled bays narrow like they have done in Shanklin car park? A person in a wheelchair who does not drive will not be able to get out of the car if its parked one way. Park the car the other way then you cannot open the boot to get the wheelchair out.
Well done, not only are the roads, car parks and pavements eroded but now disability access is being disregarded. Because Disabled is printed on the bay it does not mean, that accessibility for the disabled is being meet. That is cheating…..
If a person cannot get out of the car or get the wheelchair out then they are denied their basic rights of access.
Also if forces more people to go to the supermarkets which takes away custom from the local shops. Supermarkets do not have post offices or banks in them.
To create 6 extra spaces are they making bays even narrower which means more dents in our doors from people who are not careful?
I hope this isn’t as stupid as it sounds. If people have to leave via New St , which is one way, the only way to Node Hill will be into Pyle St, then West St , then Trafalgar Rd back to New St, then Chapel St which they could have accessed from the Car Park !! Or of course down the High St and around Coppins Bridge to get back to the south of the town. Ridiculous.
Would it not be better to fill some potholes or complete some roads with this tarmac ???
