Newport Rowing Club have launched their Atlantic Challenge this week which will see members row a total distance of 4,700km.

The club’s aim is to row the distance from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua – the 4,700km course of the world-famous Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge that is run each December.

Members will be completing the challenge from home on rowing machines as the club is largely closed due to lockdown. The 20 club members and friends aim to row over 100kms a day and meet the challenge target by the end of July.

Chairman Kev Bennett explains:

“We wanted to find a way to join together as a club whilst we can’t get out and compete on the water. It also gives us a chance to raise money for the Mountbatten Hospice who do so much good work across the island”.
