Newport CE Primary School has been rated as a ‘good school, with outstanding early years provision’ by Ofsted despite having seen 4 different headteachers in the 4 years since it was placed in special measures.
After its latest inspection, Ofsted noted the ‘work in rebuilding the school culture after considerable changes in leadership and teaching’ and that ‘pupils are proud of their school’.
Executive headteacher Katherine Marshall is understandably delighted with the school’s latest inspection:
“Progress like this is only possible because staff and governors have gone the extra mile and worked together for the good of the children and school. Our amazing teachers, support staff and governors have truly risen to the challenges presented and kept faith with the process. It really has been a journey and I’m so pleased that their work has been recognised as ultimately we all want the best for the children at Newport.”
During the pathway from ‘requires improvement’ to ‘good’, the school federated with Carisbrooke CE Primary School. Chair of governors Rod Warne commented:
“Working collaboratively has undoubtedly been a benefit to both schools. I am very confident that the federation will go from strength-to-strength and may be a model other schools wish to follow.”
Chris Whitehouse, Conservative councillor for the Newport West Ward in which the school is located, added:
“Congratulations are due to the school’s senior leadership team, all the staff, governors and pupils alike. Well done to all concerned, an example of what can be achieved by setting clear goals and working as a team!”

Head of school at Newport, Kirsty Wallace has been an integral part of the school’s programme of improvement. From her original position as the school’s special needs coordinator she took on the role of deputy head in September 2015 before being appointed to lead at Newport.
Kirsty added:
“Newport is a fabulous school, I’ve seen many staff and families come and go. I am incredibly grateful for the families, staff and governors who have stayed the course and to those who have joined, all of whom have made such a difference. We make a great team and I’m certain that there will be more good news for Newport in the future.”
