E.E Downer butchers in Newport, which earlier this month announced it was to close after 84 years of trading, has been given a new lease of life thanks to fellow Island-based family butchers W.W Woodford & Son.
The news of another small business disappearing from the high street hit the local community hard, but Bembridge-based W.W Woodford & Sons, established in 1903, have today (Monday) announced they are taking over the management of the shop at 1 St James’ Street.
Bringing the Woodford name to the heart of the Island ensures that Newport continues to benefit from fantastic, high-quality and local produce from a reputable, family-run supplier.
Ill health of the current owner, Greg Downer, has led to the change in management but the quality of the meat will not be compromised.
Graham Hawkins, Owner of W.W Woodford & Sons, says:
“We were shocked and saddened at the announcement of the closure of this popular store and immediately saw an opportunity for us to continue the supply of high-quality meats and local produce to Newport.
“We look forward to serving existing customers and welcoming new members of the local community into the shop”.

Great news, lets hope the local people who used Mr Downer will carry on their trade with the new owners.
Hope they will sell their home made Pies and Sausage rolls
Burger me, this is great news. For once, the steaks aren’t too high.
Good news for a change got to love the small shops
Best hope that they sell the same sausage rolls they do in their Bembridge shop, wonderful.
