First MTR – trading as South Western Railway – have begun their 7-year stint as operator of Island Line this morning (Sunday).
Today’s handover of the South Western rail franchise marks the biggest change to the local railway network in over 20 years and includes a new logo and branding (pictured left).
The franchise had, until last night, been operated by Stagecoach-owned South West Trains who won 3 terms in 1996, 2004 and 2007.
According to First MTR South Western, Islanders can expect better connections with cross-Solent travel and mainland train services, free wifi at stations and new rolling stock to replace the aging 1938 trains.
The new operators say they are keen to work with Islanders and stakeholders to ensure a viable future on a sustainable footing for the Island’s railway network. A consultation document on the options available will be launched towards Late September/Early October and following a period of consultation, a plan will be submitted to the Department for Transport in Spring 2018.
Isle of Wight Council Cabinet member for infrastructure and transport, Councillor Ian Ward, has said:

I particularly welcome the introduction of the Island Line stakeholder forum and the chance for input to help deliver improvements that passengers want and ensure an excellent service.
“I believe this new partnership will not only improve people’s journeys but keep our economy growing and bring much needed investment to the Island Line and we look forward to working with South Western Railway in making that happen. This is great news for residents and visitors alike.”
