Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely has welcomed the latest Government announcement to boost police funding by over £1.1billion – the biggest increase the police system has seen in a decade.
The increase will see the overall total boosted to £15.2billion – 10% more than the core (resource) grant provided to forces last year.
The funding will enable police forces to recruit 6,000 of the 20,000 additional police officers promised by the end of March 2021.
Welcoming the announcement, Bob said:
“This is great news for our local police force. It means we can have more police on our streets tackling crime and making our Island a safer place to live.
“I’m pleased that this Government is already delivering on it’s promises which will produce tangible results to the benefit of everyone.”
The Government will provide £150million in funding to fight organised crime and continue to crack down on online child abuse. Tackling serious violence will be also backed with £39million, which includes £20million for county lines drug dealing, which is seeing abhorrent gangs terrorising our towns.
As announced by the Home Secretary on Tuesday 21st January, funding for counter-terrorism policing will total £906million in 2020 to 2021, a year-on-year increase of £90million.
Well, it’s not really a budget increase if it’s to meet the increase in workers promised by the government.
And it’s the biggest increase in a decade because a decade ago this government started to reduce budgets. So it would be like your Dr saying, this year I’m going to be spending more time with you as a patient than I have in a decade, well that would be good if you hadn’t forced me into 2 minute meetings.
You can’t expect to be rewarded for taking a small step to reduce the damage you’ve caused.
Nonsense.

But I thought the government, prior prime minister and current prime minister told us for years, well a decade, that money could be saved from the police and the drop in police numbers had no correlation to crime? Th wind is blowing outside, so I guess that explains the change in position, but at least pretend to have some integrity.
This is great news, I do hope the police crack down on the drug abuse that is so prevalent around Lake and Sandown. Time for a total complete crack down. Enough is enough.
So you only approve the positive comments, now I get it. I think that’s actually illegal, so you should alter that before you get reported.

Any increase in funding is clearly a positive step but, as other commentators have pointed out, it only goes part of the way towards funding improvements that have already been announced. It also has to be shared between all the country’s forces and, in our case, the rest of the Hampshire authority.
I have to wonder how much, if any, of it will actually reach the island. My suspicion is that the island is unlikely to rank very highly in Hampshire Authority’s list of funding priorities.
A couple of extra PCSOs won’t compensate for the years of budget cuts, front desk closures and service reductions.

But then again being a die-hard toeing-the-party-line conservative, I’m sure he equally welcomed the cut, after cut, after cut, to police funding the conservative government has made since 2010.
Lets face it, he’d welcome anything he was told to, by his masters in westminster…
it’s almost as if a recession means negative growth financially.
But eh, let’s ignore the Great Depression and Post WW1 Germany where you have to wheelbarrow a load of money to buy bread.
Or since brexit’s happening, it might be like the good old days all over again!
