MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED ON DEMOLITION SITE IN NEWPORT

manfallsdemolitionatkinsondrive9UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, Police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are in attendance at Atkinson Drive in Newport this morning (Thursday), where a man is understood to have fallen from a building during demolition work in what is being described as an ‘industrial incident’.

A Rescue Tender, an Aerial Ladder Platform and an appliance from Newport Fire Station were mobilised to the scene at Atkinson House near Summerfields Primary School at shortly before 09:20.

Firefighters are assisting the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service with rescuing the casualty, who is thought to have sustained serious injuries. The specifics of the incident are currently unclear.

Police have taken control of the scene.

UPDATE @ 10:15 – The casualty has been rushed to St Mary’s Hospital, where the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance landed a short time ago.

It has been confirmed that the man fell and has suffered a cardiac arrest.

Several officials are now on site at Atkinson Drive, including representatives from the contracted companies.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have now left the scene, however several Police officers remain.

UPDATE @ 10:45 – The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has in the last few minutes airlifted the casualty to a mainland hospital.

Investigations into the incident continue.

UPDATE @ 18:25 – Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have today visited the site at Atkinson Drive, where Police remain this evening.

An update on the man’s condition is yet to be given.
