The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed that a major roadworks scheme in Newport is set to get underway by October – a year after work was originally meant to begin.
As first reported by Island Echo, plans are in place to replace St Mary’s Roundabout with a large traffic light junction. In addition to this, the Forest Road junction will also be signalised and there will be other changes in the area of Hunnyhill, Medina Way and Parkhurst Road.
Plans were approved back in September last year with the intention to begin work the following month. However, earlier this year it was announced that the scheme had been pushed back until at least the Autumn of 2019.
It has now been confirmed that the intention is to begin work on 30th September, although this is still a provisional date.
Significant disruption is expected over a 15 to 18 month period with temporary speed limits, reduction in the number of lanes and no doubt temporary traffic lights.
Councillor Ian Ward, the council’s Cabinet member for infrastructure and transport, said:
“It is important to be clear from the outset that a scheme of this nature, although bringing long-term benefits, is of such a scope and scale that some disruption to travel is inevitable.
“I think this project demonstrates the ability of the council to attract new government money to support schemes that will benefit the whole Island. I am particularly pleased the work will also bring about enhanced features not just for cars but for pedestrians and cyclists also.”

To assist access to the Riverway and Dodnor trading estates, parking will be suspended in both Manners View and Riverway.

What a waste of money build the bridge .I was at the initial discussion .at riverside .it was already decided by council that was my thpughts
Why spend hundreds of thousands of pounds to change a system that has been running fairly smoothly for years, along with resurfacing cul de sacs and little used roads, when some of the most used roads on the island are so badly potholed they are dangerous to use, especially for cyclists who have to dodge and weave to avoid them, thus causing drivers anguish.
Good way to cause total mayhem, put in traffic lights on a major island road. Our council are a bunch of clowns and island roads are a joke.
What a total fxxkup this is going to be it works do why cause this look at the fxxking bridge total heap of shxt if they can’t clear the traffic going down the duel it’s a waste if time no wonder council tax went wait for next year’s rise and why more traffic lights bunch of toxxsers they are.
Don’t try to fix something that isn’t broken , instead build 2 bridges for pedestrians over coppins bridge and take those traffic lights away!
A large traffic light junction…..which will cause dalays everyday in the future ,,,its a deliberate act by the council to slow everyone down and control everyone …..just another way the council will piss money away on needless things i wonder how many millions it will cost in delays in peoples lives ….

Do this lot of idiots ever listen to joe public who use these roads everyday, no never!! its the main roundabout at the bottom that needs sorting out not the top which is only busy at rush hours!!
And I thought common sense had prevailed and that this idiotic scheme had been dropped. It will be a bigger disaster than the floating bridge.
How to cause gridlock in one easy lesson! The money would be far more effectively deployed by replacing the lights at Hare & Hounds with a mini roundabout. While they’re at it, a roundabout at the boyyom of Areton Shute would be useful too!
It’s so disappointing that a few road signs telling drivers to indicate their intentions ,and a few more white lines would solve the problems on the roundabout . I could think of a lot more things the council could spend 10 million quid on rather than this .

God help you if you have to get to St Marys in an emergency…And with the road works and a floating bridge? that is at best useless. Cowes will be difficult to access, wander how this will affect the Red Funnel ferry service ??
I’m guessing the people that took the decision to approve this scheme won’t be around to face the music when it all goes wrong. I’m guessing they will melt away to a golf course on a nice big pension.
Can you please build a bridge first so that we can all get off the island.
Never gonna happen, all pie in the sky, they cant even get enough support to fund the feasability study so that tells you what the majority of the islanders are saying so forget about harping on about a bloody bridge /tunnel!
