VIDEO: Crowds turned out in their thousands for the annual Bembridge Fort Walk yesterday evening (Wednesday).
Grey skies and a little bit of wind didn’t deter hundred and hundreds of people from turning out to walk to St Helens Fort and back again. For the second year running the sun was no where to be seen meaning numbers taking part in the local ‘happening’ were expected to be down on previous years, but the crowds were in fact strong at an estimated 2,000.
Despite the large turnout, the walk is unorganised and unofficial and has no set date or time. In recent years the walk has grown in popularity and is seeing more and more people taking part.
Traditionally, the 3/4 mile trek takes place on the lowest tide in August and is normally on a weekday evening.
The first walkers reached at the fort at 17:40 – an hour before low tide.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were keeping a watch over the walkers alongside Bembridge RNLI’s inshore D-class lifeboat. Thankfully, the event passed without incident.
