Island residents took the chance to ask the Isle of Wight’s Parliamentary Candidates about local and national issues ahead next week’s General Election during a hustings event at Bembridge Sailing Club this evening (Wednesday).
Campaign group 38 Degrees hosted the free event for voters on the Isle of Wight, which is a constituency deemed a ‘key marginal seat’.
Attendees heard from each of the leading candidates about why they believe they’re best placed to become the Island’s next MP. All candidates attended the event apart from Labour’s Julian Critchley, who was unable to attend at short notice.
38 Degrees is hosting hustings in many of closely-watched seats of this General Election, to make sure that the short election timeline doesn’t hinder people finding out about the candidates vying for their votes.
Amy Lockwood, Campaigns Manager at 38 Degrees, said:
“With only a few weeks/days to go until voters go to the polls, it’s crucial people have the opportunity to quiz the candidates who want their votes.
“How each of us votes will impact Isle of Wight as well as the rest of the UK – MPs elected to parliament will help shape everything from the way Brexit works, our economy and local services like the NHS”.
Bob Seely (Con), Daryll Pitcher (UKIP), Vix Lowthion (Green), Julie Jones-Evans (Ind) and Nicholas Belfitt (Lib Dem) all received several rounds of applause for their comments, but the night seemed to go in the favour of Vix Lowthion.
