The Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, Nick Belfitt, who stood in June’s general election, has met with the new Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable as part of his tour of the UK.
Mr Belfitt met Vince Cable after the new leader spoke to a packed venue in Southampton, where he met members from across the Solent region.
Mr Cable made a short speech out lining the key areas that the Liberal Democrats will focus on including homelessness, the environment and young people. He also made a pledge to ‘expose’ what he referred to as a ‘Grand Coalition of Brexit’, referring to the Conservative and Labour stances over Brexit.
Nick Belfitt has said that he was surprised by the energy of the new leader as he met him for the first time:
“I had never met Vince before and only seen him on the TV, but I was really surprised how much energy and a commanding presents he brings to the role of Lib Dem Leader. He is strong on his policy and does not shy away from difficult questions. He talks straight when it comes to politics and seeks the best rational outcomes.
“At a time of half baked populist politics, it’s nice to meet someone talking about the rational approach”.
Mr Belfitt also had a brief one to one chat with the leader where he highlighted a few of the Island’s issues and the impact of Brexit. He added:
“I was keen to hear how much he knew about us on the Island. He was aware of the tough situation we are in over education and services. He also spoke about support for the local party and how he can help us build our message for the Island, but we both agreed that the campaign must turn to people who feel lost after the chaos of Brexit and the pressures of services being cut.”
Mr Belfitt has said that the Liberal Democrats will continue to fight to gain what they say is a growing number of voters who are upset with the Labour and Tories positions on Brexit.
