22 junior athletes from the 3 Isle of Wight rowing clubs – Newport, Ryde and Shanklin – competed in the 6th Isle of Wight Rowing Forum’s Junior Regatta on Sunday (29th April).
The event saw racing for Coxed Quad Sculls and Single Sculls over a straight 500m course on the River Medina, based at Newport Rowing Club who hosted the event – supported by officials from Ryde and Shanklin and utilizing equipment from all 3 clubs.
In order to encourage and develop the close working relationship the clubs have, and to foster good sportsmanship between the crews, for the Cox Quads races the crews were mixed and drawn from the hat which lead to some very exciting racing with some very close finishes. This was followed by racing in Single Scull for experienced junior scullers but unfortunately an event for the less experienced Single Scullers, using floats, was abandoned as the conditions deteriorated and it was deemed to be unsafe.
The Isle of Wight Forum chairman Garry Walters (Shanklin) and Secretary Steve Bull (Ryde) presented IWRF Medals to the podium placed crews and scullers.
