Hovertravel’s Island Flyer is set to re-enter service in the next few weeks having undergone a propeller replacement.
Both Solent Flyer and Island Flyer were pulled from service back in August after a fault developed, forcing the replacement of the propellers on each craft. The decision to take both Flyers out of action resulted in Island Express returning from Southampton to run alongside the trusty, but aging, Freedom 90.
Solent Flyer re-entered service a couple of weeks back and has been carrying out the majority of commuter crossings since, however, yesterday afternoon (Sunday) one of the rudder panels at the rear of Solent Flyer was noted to be hanging freely as it departed Southsea, prompting a change over to one of the older hovercraft for the next crossing from Ryde. It is understood the minor issue has since been resolved.
With the prop replacement having been successfully carried out on sister craft Island Flyer, she is to now undergo a number of tests before returning to the Ryde-Southsea route in the next few weeks.
It has been confirmed that Island Express is to be moved back to Woolston in Southampton for the winter months, with a normal 2-craft timetable to be operated by Solent Flyer and Island Flyer. Freedom 90, which is to remain at Ryde, will act as the standby craft.
