An Isle of Wight businessman from Sandown has been arrested and questioned as part of an investigation by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) into a suspected £135,000 VAT fraud.
HMRC officers arrested the unnamed 48-year-old man at a residential property in Sandown yesterday morning (Wednesday), and 2 business premises and a residential address in the Sandown and Shanklin areas have been searched. Computers, business and personal records were seized during the operation.
Alan Tully, Assistant Director, Fraud Investigation Service, HMRC, said:
“HMRC will not hesitate to investigate those suspected of VAT evasion. We ask anyone with information about suspected tax fraud to contact our 24-hour Hotline on 0800 59 5000.”
The man has been interviewed by HMRC officers and bailed for 3 months, pending further enquiries.
