HTP Apprenticeship College has announced that 2 of its Island learners have been shortlisted in the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ category at the 2017 The Shine Awards.
The Shine Awards, organised by The Caterer and People 1st, celebrate the contribution that women – and those who support them – bring to the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism industry.
Adrienn Somogyi from the Ocean View Hotel in Shanklin and Lauren Dove from the Ale & Oyster Restaurant and Bar in Ventnor are going up against 3 others in the category.
Adrienn completed her Advanced Apprenticeship in Hospitality Supervision with HTP and has progressed on to her Higher Apprenticeship in Hospitality Management. She said:
“I have gained in confidence so much. This is because I understand what I must do to be an effective manager and why this is important.
“The culture, and of course language, are different here in the UK. The apprenticeship and the support I have from my HTP Apprenticeship College training consultant has help me understand British customers, working relationships and employment law. I feel much more secure and confident as I am able to adapt my style to deal appropriately with each situation and address the needs of individual members of staff effectively”.
Lauren’s willingness to share knowledge, skills, creative ideas and support others has had a huge impact on the Ventnor business. She truly stands head and shoulder above her peers.

“If we could clone Lauren the staff shortages in the industry would be solved! She takes an active interest in the continuous development of the business and strives to make a difference by working closely with her colleagues and supporting the business owners in any way she can.
“The apprenticeship route has enabled her to develop an outstanding skill level and gain confidence. She will have no problem progressing from intermediate to an advanced level programme. She shows a strong commitment to learning and development, is totally reliable and demonstrates the ability, determination and commitment to become a future leader in the industry.”
Some 22 leading figures from hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism judged the awards, which not only recognise the achievements of women, but also seek to celebrate the critical role businesses and mentors can play in changing workplace cultures so as to make the most of everybody’s skills.
The finals take place this year at a dazzling black tie dinner at 8 Northumberland Avenue, London on Monday 16th October 2017.
