INQUEST HEARS HOW GURNARD MAN SHOT HIMSELF IN THE HEAD TWICE

The scene at Marsh Road, Gurnard last February

The death of Gurnard resident David Nurse, who shot himself in the head twice with an unregistered pistol, has been ruled as suicide by Isle of Wight Coroner Caroline Sumeray.

77-year-old David Nurse was found dead in his home on Marsh Road on 1st February last year. A community nurse arrived at the property as part of a routine visit to find Mr Nurse with 2 fatal gunshot wounds to his head.

The day before, on 31st January 2018, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service had been informed that Mr Nurse was not only suicidal, but that he had a firearm. Ambulance call operators failed to pass this information onto the Police, which the Coroner has this week said was a massive failure by the ambulance service that could have had catastrophic consequences.

The phone call came about when a delivery man informed his mother that Mr Nurse was suicidal, news of which was in turn passed onto Mr Nurse’s landlady who then called the ambulance service. The control room spoke to Mr Nurse who reassured them he was OK.

The death of David Nurse has been recorded as suicide.

The landlady knew he has a gun? Surely that would have been a breach of his lease and she should have called the police. That’s the FAILURE point!!
