HUNDREDS of spectators lined the northern shores of the Island yesterday evening to watch 7 P&O cruise ships pass through the Solent in a celebration of 175 years of the company.
One vantage point, East Cowes Esplanade, was full with cars stretching one end to the other with many people heading to the former castle at the northern end of the Esplanade for the best viewing point. Many took to the top of Ryde Pier, while others decided to walk out on Ryde Sands while the tide was out.
Heavy fog ruined the evening for many, leading to the cancellation of the Red Arrows Aerial Display and poor visibility of the ships, as Island Echo’s Live Broadcast showed.
HMS Dragon added to the excitement as the Naval Type 45 destroyer followed The Princess Royal down the Solent on board Trinity House’s THV Patricia.
