People using services at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice’s John Cheverton Centre have chosen the winners of a photography competition, who will have their work showcased in Earl Mountbatten Hospice’s 2018 Calendar.
The search for the winning entries was launched in March and the response was overwhelming with over 300 entries – all worthy winners in their own right. However, a dozen had to be chosen and after much deliberation, a shortlist of 24 was drawn up, thanks to the support of local photographer Peter Billington.
The final 12 images were then chosen by 5 people using hospice services, including Jean Wheeldon, of Carisbrooke, who said:
“The photos touch so many chords and bring back lots of happy memories for me, of walking on the Island.”
Fellow judge John Tuskin, of Sandown, commented:
“They are very colourful and eye-catching; it’s wonderful what you can do with a camera!”
The winners were chosen as follows:
January – Ian Groves for a frosty image of Newtown
February – Andrew Sharpe for a photo of the sunset over Ventnor Haven
March – Martin Timbers for a photo showing the inside of Quarr Abbey
April – Roger Millward who captured a dog jumping through a field of bluebells
May – Christian Beasley for a photo of wild garlic covering the ground at Shorwell Shute
June – Debbie Hart for her photo which captured a fox sitting beside an egret
July – Ian Pratt who timed his photo just perfectly to catch smoke billowing from a canon at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes
August – Margaret Smith who caught the perfect reflection of Yarmouth Mill in the creek
September – Ian Pratt who got very close to a beautiful red squirrel
October – Les Lockhart who took a moonlit view of Ventnor beach
November – Allan Marsh whose view of the former floating bridge at East Cowes caught the judges’ eye
December – Les Lockhart for a snowy and frosty view of the downs
Winners will receive 10 copies of the 2018 calendar and their photograph printed onto a canvas. Once published, the calendar will be sold in the 10 hospice shops across the Isle of Wight, raising funds to support and care for Islanders when they need it most.
Jodie Wilmott, Retail Area Manager for Earl Mountbatten Hospice, said:
“We have been overwhelmed by the quality of the images we have received. It’s a shame that only 12 could be chosen, as there was a huge amount of talent across the board. I’d like to thank everyone who submitted photos, and we look forward to seeing the final version when it is ready for sale in our ten hospice shops later in the year.”
