The Isle of Wight Green Party have thanked every single Islander who voted Green in this year’s General Election following 6 months of hard campaigning.
The Green vote on the Isle of Wight of 12,915 was the second highest in the country after Brighton Pavillion. The vote outperformed both the other targets of Bristol West and Sheffield Central.
Speaking today, Vix Lowthion, the Green Parliamentary candidate, said:
“We spoke with many disillusioned Conservative voters, who are concerned about issues of protection and conservation of our island and our planet. Adding over 3,000 votes in a national and local climate – where the big two parties have surged – is a tribute to how important the environment and fairness is for voters here.
“I am so very very proud of the entire Green team for winning every single local vote, with very little national media support. This is a firm foundation, and we will continue to build on this in future elections.
“Over half a million voters in the UK voted Green on Thursday, more than half who voted for the SNP, and yet in this First Past the Post system there is only 1 Green MP and 35 SNP representatives. Our system fails to provide a diversity of voices at Westminster, and the next government must look closely at electoral reform”.
The Isle of Wight Green Party are now turning their energies onto revisiting the Eco Island legacy, and how we can take practical steps to greater sustainable improvements with regards to energy, transport, food and the Island economy.
