Over 60 people filled the room at the launch of the Green Party’s bid to gain their second Green MP, here on the Isle of Wight.
Accompanied by Deputy leader of the national Green Party Amelia Womack, party activists and members of the public assembled in Cowes to show their support for the high-profile campaign.
Due to the limitations of the First Past the Post electoral system, whilst 2 million people voted Green at the MEP elections in May Caroline Lucas remains the only Green MP in the House of Commons. The Green vote on the Isle of Wight in 2017 was the second-highest in the whole of the United Kingdom, and so has been identified as a key seat in the 2019 General Election for the Greens.
Deputy leader Amelia Womack said:
“Caroline Lucas has been alone in Westminster for too long. But no longer! A Green vote on the Isle of Wight is the most powerful vote you can have – to create real and lasting change.”
Vix outlined her plans as a Green MP for the Island, which includes investment in our schools and hospital, tackling the climate emergency and working with the island’s biosphere, and bringing the Brexit shambles to an end. She said:
“The United Nations scientists are clear – we have 10 years left to save the planet. This General Election isn’t just about the Brexit Crisis of the next 5 months, but also meaningful action on the climate crisis for the next 5 years. Without Green MPs in Parliament this action will not go far enough. The Isle of Wight gives the climate movement a rare opportunity to get more Greens elected to Westminster. And we are going to work for that chance!”

Her partner isn’t in the energy industry: fracking or coal mining. Surely we need some raw materials; we don’t get enough from recycling alone (yet). The issue is with how responsibly the materials are extracted and used.
The only climate movement ive heard about is extinction rebellion.

Can’t fight climate change without democracy and it seems the Greens are not interested in that. Just because you don’t agree with the result of a vote you can not try to prevent it, especially if you’re a politician. I was a big Greens supporter, no more, any party that ignores democracy is a danger.

Another referendum would be just as democratic, and more up-to-date as the first one. If you are afraid that the result would change, you are being undemocratic to press for a three-and-a-half year old decision now that we know what is at stake.

Rising sea levels, wildfires around the world, more frequent and extreme storms, rising sea temperatures, plant and animal extinctions… Isn’t it amazing what can be faked by modern computer technology?!
and if you study your natural history books you will see all of it has happened before and in many cases worse. It just seems worse now because of instant news from anywhere in the world, whereas before it would take days or months to hear. Sometimes never.
