Black History Month is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the myriad of contributions black people have made to our country and the Island, including health services. As a result, the Isle of Wight NHS Trust is this week paying tribute to staff working in the Trust by hosting a ‘Cultural Kitchen’.
The Full Circle Restaurant at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport is holding a themed event by adapting the menu to suit the variety of black ethnic origins with recipes being provided by staff to reflect their authentic dishes cooked and served in the hospital restaurant. Each dish will be named by the person that has kindly contributed it.
To kick start the week, the Trust welcomed Eibu, head chef from Bendula Carribean Bar and Restaurant in Ryde, who assisted Trust chef Gary Saunders with cooking authentic dishes. Staff and visitors were also greeted by community group ‘IW Equals’ who wore traditional dress, and the Trust’s Equalities Lead, Sam Greatrex.
Sam said:
“What an exciting start to cultural kitchen week. It was fantastic to celebrate the work of so many extraordinary members of the BME community whilst enjoying some wonderful food cooked by Eibu”.
Yesterday (Tuesday) members of the Isle of Wight NHS Trust Board enjoyed a traditional recipe provided by Ben Davis, COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Administrator at the Trust. Ben is also a member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, Home of RasTafarI.
Other special dishes will be cooked each day this week including fusion food with the assistance of ‘IW Equals’. Pop along this week to enjoy some of these delicious meals.
