COUNCILLOR STEWART ELECTED AS NEW COUNCIL LEADER

Cllr Dave Stewart

Councillor Dave Stewart has been elected as the new leader of the Isle of Wight Council tonight (Wednesday).

Following the shock resignation of Cllr Jonathan Bacon as Leader and Cllr Steve Stubbings as Deputy Leader, councillors had been tasked with electing a new leader to take the Isle of Wight Council forward in the run up to May’s local elections.

Cllr Stewart, a Conservative, has been elected into the role with a total of 19 votes against the 15 votes for Cllr Ian Stephens, an Independent.

The man who sparked this evening’s situation, Cllr Bacon, was not present at the meeting which took place at County Hall in Newport. Cllr Stubbings abstained from the vote.

Cllr Stewart will, in the coming days, confirm details of members that will form his Executive and their responsibilities.
