Coronavirus is present in nearly 1 in 4 care homes on the Isle of Wight, it has been revealed.
Latest figures from Public Health England confirm 17 homes on the Island out of 75 (23%) are reporting a suspected or confirmed outbreak of Covid-19.
Since 31st March, a steady number of care homes have been confirming the virus has reached them. In the week beginning 14th April, 9 further care homes reported the virus, more than doubling the previously recorded 6. However, only 2 care homes last week showed signs of, or confirmed the disease bringing the total to 17.
Data from the Office for National Statistics found 2 people had died in care homes on the Island due to COVID-19 and a third of coronavirus-related deaths in the country were now being reported at care homes.
Earlier this week, health secretary, Matt Hancock, said those working and living in care homes will be eligible to be tested, even if they are not showing symptoms.
People over the age of 70 and those with underlying health conditions are some of the most vulnerable to contracting the virus and were told quickly by the government of the need to self-isolate, with the NHS sending letters to those who needed to.

So is it 17 or 2 I’m slightly confused
Why are the care homes not named .in my job I have to enter these premises
Exactly, because they don’t want to frighten us, BUT this lack of information when OUR lives are at risk is so wrong.
The Government always do what is best for them, not us.
Whilst we should all be careful, then would you go to one if you knew it had the virus to change a washer? Most wouldn’t. So we are kept in the dark risking our loved ones as well as us.
This is wrong.
Well at least they have just put up a map, or a list, saying that three have died in Ryde etc.
As useless information as not having such at all should you need to work in stricken homes.
Seems we are all, given the vaccine is a year and a half away, IF at all, likely to become victims to a more or lesser degree by then as we relax the lockdown.
A out of date map
Is there really anyone here who is actually surprised by this news?
