UPDATED: An Island man has died in hospital following an incident on a demolition site in Newport last week.
At around 09:20 on Thursday morning (13th October) emergency services were called to Atkinson Drive after reports of an ‘industrial incident’, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Police, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service all attended the scene at what was the Isle of Wight Council’s Atkinson House. It is there that firefighters assisted paramedics in moving the casualty, before he was then rushed to St Mary’s Hospital by ambulance.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance later airlifted the worker to Southampton General Hospital, where it is understood he was placed on life support.
Sadly, despite the efforts of all involved, the currently unnamed man passed away yesterday (Wednesday).
The Heath and Safety Executive (HSE) have confirmed they are working with Hampshire Constabulary to carry out a full investigation into this tragic event.
Meanwhile Southern Housing Group (SHG), owners of the land where 13 properties are to be built, have confirmed that work on the site has been suspended.
Alan Townshend, Group Development Director of SHG has said:
“We are deeply sorry to hear about the death of the construction worker who sustained injuries at one of our sites in Newport last week; our thoughts and sympathies are with his family at this difficult time.
“We remain committed to closely working with the relevant authorities and taking the necessary steps to fully investigate this incident.
“The site is currently closed and will only be reopened when Southern Housing Group, and all involved parties, are satisfied that it is safe to do so.”
The cause of the incident is currently unclear.
