GALLERY: The Island’s carnival season kicked off in style on Saturday as crowds gathered to watch Newport’s main procession through the center of town on a true Summer evening.
The weather remained calm and dry for the first carnival of 2013, which saw a wonderful mix of colour and style pass through the streets of Newport as crowds of spectators lined the roadside.
Newport Fire Station traditionally led the procession in their second pumping appliance, followed by Newport’s Butterfly Float entry, which was well received. The Island’s marching bands put on a good performance, bringing that extra spark to Newport as the drums echoed throughout.
The Wight Strollers, who have taken the carnival scene by storm over the past couple of years, amazed yet again with their entry based on a Mexican theme and a cleverly designed horse costume, apt for the hot weather the Isle of Wight has been experiencing over the past two weeks.
The carnival moves on to Sandown this week with the Children’s procession on Friday and the Main procession on Saturday, moving off at 19:00.
