The 17-year-old driver of a car which careered off the road and ended up 15m down an embankment on Tuesday night says he was doing just 40mph when the car ‘slid out’ on a corner.
As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services were called to Military Road between Freshwater and Brook at 21:30 on Tuesday when a Vauxhall Corsa left the road. Police, fire and ambulance resources attended the scene and conveyed 3 teenagers – all aged between 17 and 19 and from Freshwater – to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport.
The driver was later airlifted to Southampton with serious injuries. He is now being treated for 4 broken vertebrae; a fractured eye socket; deep gashes above and below the eye; a cracked rib cage and bruised lungs.
Recalling the incident, the young driver (who Island Echo are not naming) said:
“I hit a corner at 40/45 mph on a 60mph road. The car slides so I counter steer but by this point we had already hit the verge. We fell into a ditch and tumbled”.
1 of the passengers managed to free himself from the vehicle in order to make a 999 call, whilst the second passenger assist the trapped driver.
