Organisers of the 2017 Isle of Wight Classic Buses, Beer and Walks Weekend have once again hailed the event a great success – even going as far to say it was the most successful to date.
Around 100 classic buses and coaches, along with some 80 pubs and other licensed venues took part in the annual, fun-filled event over the weekend (14th/15th October).
The mood was almost festive, with some visitors travelling long distances to participate.
Feedback to date has included highly complimentary remarks such as: “We had a lovely day – thanks to all who made great memories for us.”; “The bus crews have been magnificent, so have the staff at the many pubs visited.” and “An absolutely splendid weekend- well worth the trip.”
Tim Marshall, of the Isle of Wight branch of Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), said:
“There is still much work to do in terms of analysing the event, but at this early stage we believe it to be the most successful yet. We have received a large number of feedback cards from our visitors and I shall also be interested to hear the response from the licensed trade.
“We should be able to announce the winner of the most popular pub or venue in the next 3-4 weeks.”
Ben Bartram, the event co-ordinator, said:
“We originally set out to organise an event that would appeal to transport enthusiasts, built around various pubs on the island. Subsequently, the scale and appeal of the event has grown, making a major contribution to island tourism in a traditionally quiet period. Interestingly, its increasing popularity has largely been spread by word of mouth, with visitors encouraging others to come.
“We are immensely grateful to the many owners who offered their vehicles for the event at their own expense, for without them we simply couldn’t do it on anything like the scale we do.”
The organising team will be reviewing the event over the next few months, looking to see where improvements can be made. Planning for the 2018 weekend will commence early in the New Year and the dedicated website at www.iwbeerandbuses.co.uk will carry information as soon as possible.
