Briddlesford Road is set to become one-way from Monday to facilitate the re-opening of Lynnbottom tip.
The Isle of Wight Council announced earlier today (Wednesday) that the Household Waste and Recycling Centre will open its doors for the first time since March on Monday 11th May.
A booking system will be in place to restrict the number of visitors at any one time and only cars will be allowed to enter the site – no vans or pick ups. Furthermore, general waste cannot be dumped – causing much anger and confusion amongst Islanders.
As part of the re-opening, Island Roads will be implementing a one-way travel restriction on Briddlesford Road from its juntion with Gravel Pit Lane to its junctions with Long Lane, in a north to south direction. This is to allow safe access and the management of traffic to and from the Civic Amenity Centre.
Furthermore, a 30mph speed restriction will also be in force on the same stretch of road.
On-street signage will depict the exact time the restrictions will come into effect.
Motorists will be diverted via Whiterails Road (or Blacklands Lane), Staplers Road and Long Lane.

If it’s a booking system.why make briddlesfield road one way
Queue management, I’d imagine. The cars will be backed up into the road, so a one way system will mean that one lane can be used as a queue, and the other lane can be used to bypass that queue.
But if it’s a booking system why shouldn’t be any queue….unless there overbooking
Don’t you love the Isle of Wight council!!
Absolute Fxxxxxg joke
We’d be better of with Trump running it!!
Or maybe a pre school group of toddlers!
Happy days xx
It would be nice to have a discussion not this brainless criticism
If you read the material all the way thro then you’d know. There was a report four hours previous to the last which informs further the Why’s and where for. Have a great day and love to you.
The report doesn’t explain why they need to make the road one way when they’re only taking bookings for one car every three minutes and could easily (and safely) avoid any queuing on the road.
Keeping their staff and the public safe I understand and accept but the one way system goes way beyond anything that is necessary or reasonable.
Crazy
Why do they need this one way system with a booking system in place. I know, to inconvenience the rest of us.
Bodge-It & Sod-It opps I mean Island roads doing what they do best. if theres a booking system one way system shouldnt be needed A trip to the tip is not really “Essential Travel”
Another badly planned idea from our half witted council not a brain cell between them. Is there room in the tip for
the council cabbages.
This is madness! If it is a pre-booking system, 10 cars per half hour, there is absolutely no need for making the road one-way as there will be NO queues! Which idiot thought this one up?
there will be queues because halfwits will NOT take notice that you need to book and will try to turn up anyway!!
So can I come in from havenstreet or do I need to come in robin hill ???? I’m totally confused
at the current opening hours to my reckoning they will do a maximum of 140 cars per day so cant see why they need to make it one way not when you have to book a space !! and what on earth are you allowed to take if you cant take general waste ? since this company took over the running of the tip the service has gone downhill they ought to be forced to open longer
Considering the fact there is a booking system in place means you can’t turn up repeatedly day after day, as the booking system will quickly run out of time slots, you can guarantee people will fill their cars with as much as possible, hence there is no way it will be a quick process removing everything from your vehicle especially considering there will be no assistance to off load the vehicle from staff.
The consequence will be long queues waiting to enter the site regardless of your booked time, this will result in mayhem especially with the short opening hours.
How many people will be turned away when the site closes?
The council are simply preparing for the inevitable chaos. Time will show if my suspicion is correct.
Open the tip at 7.00 am like it used to, and the problem of queues would be reduced
its island roads, they seem hell bent on causing problems for the motoring public at every opportunity whether they need to or not and the council encourages them ,run by petty minded self important jobsworths .
Island Roads also known as Bodge-It & Sod-It & they certainly live up to that nick name
What the hell is going on , why one way there mad !!!!!
Slightly confused! Gravel pit lane goes from by the garage on Lushington Hill to Station Road or am I missing something? Also doesn’t state how
long this is for. Shame that from Monday there will be more people urged to go back to work and that will be considered essential travel, whereas trip to the tip isn’t but being given priority.
This is a main access route to and from both Red Funnel and Wightlink essential freight services.
Which moron thinks dumping waste is more important?
They should have just let us wack our junk over the wall, not bother to stupid re cycle like they never have for the last century plus. Few more months of not recycling would have made zero difference.
Madness and chaos will ensure when the road is one way. Accidents likely
This doesn’t make any sense.
So less people able to use the tip at any one time – so why is an one way system needed?
Booking slots won’t work for everyone. Not everyone has the internet.
Seems simple to me, let people queue in their vehicles, use every other parking bay and do your best to keep people 2 metres apart when out of the car.
Doesn’t make any sense at all.
Only pre-booked vehicle’s allowed, hence a VASTLY reduced number of vehicles if any queuing on the highway.
If this has been deemed a necessary now (with the MUCH lower traffic volumes) why has this never been introduced previously when there were countless occasions when the queue of vehicles for the tip were back past Robin Hill and causing total gridlock?!
So, can we drive from Hare hounds to Newport, or from Haventstreet junction to Hare n Hounds. It is a little confusing
Clueless council, who truly couldn’t organise a brewery party. Just more proof why everything touched by them fails.
question is, if they open the tip, will dumping rubbish be classed as essential trip, and if not will the police be there to book everyone for not adhering to the lockdown rules
Jobsworths justifying their existence
It’s probably because if you have traffic coming from both directions the road will be blocked by cars trying to enter the tip and because it’s a booking system people will be waiting for there time to enter and be bloking the road ..It’s not hard to work out
Meanwhile – outside Freshwater Afton tip :-
Passer bye “It’s no good waiting here mate, this tip isn’t open yet
Motorist “I know, I’m at the end of the queue for Lynbottom!”
A fiasco in the making. Typical IoW Council.
From its junction with Gravel pit lane, where’s that?
Surely general waste is the reason people visit the tip, everything else is collected at the roadside.
this is going to be a balls up so youve booked a slot you turn up too soon as how can you judge when to leave to arrive??? so does everybody else then what happens ??
