Over the past few months the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has received a number of unwanted call outs to bonfires, prompting a reminder to be issued about how best to report controlled burning.
Every time the fire service is called out to a bonfire or other false alarm it takes a front line appliance off the run, which could otherwise be responding to a real emergency such as a house fire or a road traffic collision.
In order to help prevent unnecessary call outs, Islanders are being urged to report controlled burning to Fire Control.
During working hours (08:30-17:00 Monday to Thursday and 08:30-16:00 on Friday) reports can be made by calling 01983 525121 or 01983 823194.
For controlled burning outside of working hours only call 02031 620 063.
Those planning on lighting a bonfire should always bear in mind that bonfires can give rise to hazards to people, property and the environment. With some forethought these hazards can be reduced.
