The Island’s MP, Bob Seely, is supporting Cowes residents and local businesses who want to see a Post Office return to the centre of the town.
Bob met with representatives from the Post Office last week to discuss if a branch could be put back because there is only a Post Office counter inside the Co-Operative at Mil Hill Road – some way from the centre.
The lack of facilities is made worse by having no banks open in Cowes with only a mobile Lloyds van visiting.
Bob said:
“There are a host of problems having the Post Office so far away from the town centre, especially for pensioners, businesses and for visitors to Cowes Week, for example, who find it hard to get any cash.
“The meeting with the Post Office was positive and they are open to applications for a second Post Office in Cowes.”
The Post Office will examine 6 months of data starting in mid-May until November time. A decision will be made in December.
Bob added:
“The key point for business, residents and organistations is that those people who wish to see the Post Office back in the centre of town need to make representations to the Post Office in the early autumn to demonstrate that there is demand.
“I am already in contact with local Councillors and I will be talking more generally to business and residents. I will be working with residents, Cllrs and business to put a strong case to find a way to have a Post Office counter back in Cowes High Street.”
