The burning of materials without a licence, which has been sending plumes of black smoke into the skies above Sandown for over a week, has prompted an investigation by the Isle of Wight Council.
Environmental officers visited a building site off Beachfield Road today (Tuesday) where it is understood the unlicensed burning of a number of materials, including polythene, has been taking place.
Shortly before 07:45 this morning Island Echo was contacted by several readers reporting a large plume of thick, black smoke rising from the cliff tops above Sandown. It comes following similar reports early on Friday morning and last Tuesday too.
Firefighters from Shanklin were this afternoon mobilised to the scene over fears a large fire had broken out. But on arrival crews discovered it was in fact a controlled bonfire, but that the burning was unlicensed.
The Isle of Wight Council is looking into the matter.
