Residents, families and staff from The Elms Residential Home in Bembridge came together this September to raise awareness of dementia and show their support for people living with the condition and those who care for them.
On 9th September, residents and their families took part in a special dementia awareness walk, setting off from The Elms in Swains Road and making their way to Bembridge Lifeboat Station. The group enjoyed a wonderful afternoon together, finishing the walk with an ice cream in the sunshine.
The walk provided an opportunity for residents, relatives and staff to come together as a community while highlighting the importance of understanding and talking about dementia.
September is recognised as Dementia Awareness Month, but for those living with dementia and their families, awareness and support are important all year round.
The Elms’ sister home, Inver House, is also continuing to support local people affected by dementia through its monthly Memory Group. Held on the first Tuesday of every month, the group is open to everyone and provides a welcoming opportunity for people to meet, connect and share experiences.
The Memory Group was officially opened in July by Hartford Care ambassador Lady Sally Gyrlls, who has continued to show her support for the homes and their efforts to bring residents, families and the wider community together.
The dementia walk is just one example of the activities organised by Nikki Clark – CRM at Hartford Care homes to ensure residents remain connected with their local communities and are able to take part in meaningful experiences alongside their families.
