Baroness Jones of Mouslecomb visited the Isle of Wight yesterday (Wednesday) in support of the campaign to have a second Green MP at Westminster.
Jenny Jones met with Green canvassers in Ryde, who were busy leafleting and knocking on doors – and finding that this is clearly a choice this time between Conservative and Green on the doorstep.
Baroness Jones then joined campaigners in St James Square, Newport and spent time talking with a couple from Ryde who have disabilities and find it increasingly difficult to get around on the Island’s ‘inaccessible streets’.
During a public meeting at Quay Arts, Baroness Jones detailed the cross-party workings in the House of Lords and how at 67-years-old she is still a relative youngster. She talked of the generational pressures in society and how the solutions to the financial and health difficulties we face is through communities working together.
Vix Lowthion, Green Parliamentary candidate for the Island, highlighted how increasingly it is the leaders of the older generation who are admired and are creating large followings across the globe – from Bernie Sanders, to Jeremy Corbyn – and even Donald Trump.
Vix continued:
“It was wonderful to hear from Jenny Jones of her experiences as Deputy Mayor of London and speaking up on Climate Change in the House of Lords. We must harness the wisdom and experiences of older people in order to make progress towards better equality of opportunity for us all”.
The next Green visit will be from environmentalist Jonathon Porritt, tomorrow evening (Friday 2nd June) at 19:00 at the Riverside Centre, Newport.
