Asda has revealed the features local shoppers can look forward to seeing at the brand new Asda Newport store, which includes the popular clothing brand George – but sadly Asda Newport won’t be 24 hours.
The 45,000 sq ft supermarket, situated on St George’s Way, is set to open its doors to Island’s shoppers for the first time on Monday 21st August, as previously reported by Island Echo. It’s been over 7 years since the initial idea was first mentioned but now the opening is just weeks away.
Asda has confirmed that it is launching the store with a one price policy, meaning that islanders will pay no more for products when shopping at Asda Newport than they would when shopping on the UK mainland.
But there is some bad news… the Island’s first Asda won’t be open 24 hours a day. The store opening hours are said to be Monday-Saturday 07:00-22:00 and 10:00-16:00 on Sundays.
Asda Newport will offer a comprehensive mix of food and services, with a particular focus on a fresh food department. Alongside this are a Create Your Own pizza counter, rotisserie, bakery, food to go and meals for tonight solutions. There will be also be a cafe of sorts, descirbed as more of a coffee bar than a restaurant space.
There’s also a George clothing department and a photo printing service. A ‘To You’ service will allow shoppers to order direct from other retailers, such as Amazon and ASOS, and have goods delivered to Asda Newport for collection.
Customers will be able to make use of a drive-thru click and collect service and can take advantage of Asda’s famously low fuel prices, as the store will boast its own petrol station.
Asda Newport has generated over 250 jobs for locals from over 3,100 applications and has seen the supermarket invest around £40million in the store, its facilities, instore team and the local economy.
Kenny Farrell, General Store Manager at Asda Newport, said:
“We’re excited to finally let our soon-to-be customers know exactly what to expect from our Newport store. We’ve worked really hard to ensure that the needs of all shoppers, be they locals or holidaymakers, in need of many or few items, are met by what our store has to offer.
“There has been a great response to the store to date and as a team, we can’t wait to throw open our doors and get to know the Isle of Wight and its residents properly in August.”
In terms of parking, 325 extra wide double lined car parking spaces will be created for shoppers, with many more speciality spaces for those with disabilities, those with children and electric cars.
