THE raising of a flag to celebrate Armed Forces Day was witnessed by Island dignitaries this morning (Monday) at a new location in Newport.

In a change from previous years, the specially commissioned Armed Forces Day flag was hoisted in St Thomas’ Square rather than at County Hall, making it more accessible for people to attend the ceremony.

Serving soldiers, members of the Royal British Legion and Council officials gathered around the temporary flagpole and watched as a member of the armed forces, on behalf of the chairman of the Isle of Wight Council Susan Scoccia, raised the flag. Prayers were read by Reverend Kevin Arkell.

A community event was held at Appley Park, Ryde on Saturday to add to the celebrations, including a firework display, static motor displays and a Proms in the Park event.
