An urgent appeal has been launched by the family member of a woman whose jewellery was apparently ‘taken’ from her person during her last hours.
Island resident Sharon had been attending to her rapidly deteriorating mother in St Mary’s Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department on the 12th April when she was moved to a ward. Sharon had been with her mother until approximately 21:30 when she left to go home as her mother slept.
After receiving a call the next day summoning her to the hospital as her mother deteriorated further, Sharon noticed that some jewellery – a ring and a bangle – belonging to her parent had ‘disappeared’.
Sharon reported the loss to the police and also to the nurse in charge at the AAU unit. who conducted an investigation internally but came up with no results. Her mother sadly took her last breaths a short time later.
Sharon said:
“I am begging the public to PLEASE help me find these two items. If you do see either of the items please could you contact me or report to the police ASAP.
“It has been so hard to come to terms with losing my mum but the grief is more devastating knowing that as she lay dying in her hospital bed unaware of her surroundings someone has removed these two items. Poor mum was unable to protect herself.”
A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said:
“We received reports of a theft at 11.29am on 28 April in relation to an incident which occurred sometime between 9pm on Monday 12 April and 8am on Tuesday 13 April at St. Mary’s Hospital.
“It is alleged that a number of items of jewellery were stolen from a patient – including a bangle and a ring.
“The investigation into the matter has been filed, after all reasonable lines of enquiry had been followed, until such time new information comes to light and the investigation will then be re-opened.”
UPDATE – The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has given a statement regarding the incident.
A Trust spokesperson said:
“We are truly sorry for the loss of Brenda and the pain her family are feeling.
“We are sorry, too, for the extra hurt caused by the disappearance of her jewellery while she was in our care.
“We have investigated and found no sign of the lost items, but we will share this appeal with all our staff in case anyone has any information that might reunite the family with these treasured possessions.”

Words fail me,what filth could do something like that.
Condolences to the the ladys family and friends R.I.P.
Unbelievable nasty thing to do to her
Yer,as she was dying (rip) with no one to protect her and very vulnerable, some rotter from the NHS might have mistakenly put it in a draw for safe keeping, I just pray for Sharon that the items were insured, innit. X
Stealing from anyone is low but stealing from a dying lady who is someone’s mother sister auntie friend is lower than low ….
Hope whoever they are get caught and throw the book at them ( I would rather string them up after naming and shaming them ).
Sincere condolences to the ladies family and friends .
Karma will happen ….what goes around comes around !!!!!
That is apsolutly sickening. Why do people do things like this. They must be proper low life to sink that low to steal off someone in that situation. I hope they get caught and the courts actually give a good punishment.. I hope a genuine person hands the item back to the family
maybe the thief will find that those jewelry items bring nothing but misery to them, until they return them and are forgiven, which could take years.
stealing from the sick and now dead, is tempting fate.
Words fail me, appalling.
Sad news about your mum, May she rest in peace bless her
My sympathies to the family. Something similar happened to my own mother – I really hope they find their mother’s jewellery. It is the sentimental attachment that is so important – not the value. It is irreplaceable to the family concerned. How very sad.
A truly sickening act, what an awful thing to do. Kind regards and condolences to the family and friends of this lady.
Camera’s will soon narrow down the person responsible
What a despicable thing to do, stealing from a dead or dying person, especially in hospital really is the lowest of the low, I hope the thief rots in hell. Hopefully something was captured on cctv. Love and hugs to the poor family involved x
