UPDATED: The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has been called to Chillerton this afternoon (Friday) following a serious road traffic collision.
Berry Shute between Chillerton and Billingham has been closed as emergency services deal with the incident, which is thought to have involved at least 1 vehicle and possibly a cyclist or motorcyclist.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has sent 2 ambulances and an officer to the scene. Emergency services were alerted at just before 11:30.
UPDATE @ 13:15 – A motorcyclist has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance in the last few minutes.
The casualty’s injuries are thought to be serious, possibly life-threatening.
The road remains closed in both directions as investigations are carried out by Police.
UPDATE @ 16:30 – The mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit are this afternoon examining the crash scene and gathering evidence.
It is now known that the motorcyclist was in collision with a Smart ForTwo, which appears to have been pulling out of a driveway.
Berry Shute has been put under a hard closure by Island Roads, but is expected to reopen later on this evening.
UPDATE @ 19:00 – Berry Shute has now reopened to traffic in both directions.
The vehicles have been recovered.
