OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAEarl Mountbatten Hospice is pleased to offer thrill-seeking fundraisers the opportunity to take on two amazing challenges in 2013, with spaces available to abseil 300ft down Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower, or to take on a Tandem Skydive from 12,000ft!

First up is the chance to strap on a harness and abseil 300ft down the side of the Spinnaker Tower on Sunday 23rd June. Participants will have a completely unique view of one of the South Coast’s most iconic buildings as they abseil solo from just below the first viewing deck. In 2012 a troop of 42 fundraisers stepped off of the small metal platform and inched their way back to terra firma, and in the process raised over £14,000 for patient care at the Hospice.

A few weeks later, on Friday 26th July, another group of ‘extreme’ fundraisers will travel to the Army Parachute Association airfield in Wiltshire and, while safely strapped to an instructor, throw themselves out a plane at 12,000ft! Jumping from this height gives participants up to 45 seconds of freefall, at speeds of 120 mph, before the serene (by comparison) canopy ride back down to earth.

Ben Rust, Community Fundraiser at the Hospice, said:

“These challenges offer fundraisers two great ways to get their adrenaline fix. The events are nerve-racking and exhilarating in their own way, and I know as I’ve taken part in both! I didn’t think it was fair to ask other people to do something this scary if I hadn’t done it myself, and I’m so glad I overcame my fears and achieved them. The feeling you have when you step off of the platform at the top of Spinnaker Tower on your own, or when you edge towards the open door of a plane at 12,000ft, can’t really be put into words.

“Another great thing about these events is the camaraderie and atmosphere on the day itself, with everyone supporting and rooting each other on. I’d encourage anyone with a love of adrenaline and adventure to have a look at these events and make 2013 the year they do something amazing for the Hospice.”

There are a limited number of spaces available for both of these challenges. To guarantee their turn in the harness for the Spinnaker Tower Abseil all participants are asked to pay a registration deposit of £50, and then raise a minimum of £150 in sponsorship. To take part in the Tandem Skydive all participants are again asked to pay a registration deposit of £50 and raise a minimum of £400 in sponsorship.

More information, and registration forms, for the abseil and skydive are available from the Hospice, all of the Hospice Shops, or you can register over the phone with a credit or debit card by calling Ben on (01983) 528989.
