Ryde Rowing Club competed in the BTC Southampton’s Spring Head of the River Race over a 5000-metre course on the River Itchen in Southampton last weekend.
The Wightlink-sponsored club had 2x 4’s racing in the 1st division – a Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Bradley Whiting, Ben Sanderson, Will Hall, Paddy Kearney – with cox Mai McKay – who had an impressive row to win their status in a time of 18:51.
They also had a Men’s Coastal Novice Four of Dan Sanderson, Isaac Gibson, Charlie Watts and Lars Groothius – with Joe Bird coxing – who rowed well to finish 2nd in their status in a time of 20:21.
In Division 2, the club had a Men’s Novice Men’s 4, racing in the riverboat section, of Matt Groothuis, Isaac Gibson, Charlie Watts, Lars Groothuis – with Mai McKay coxing – who also won their section in a time of 20:37, which was all the more impressive as they were racing in a slower coastal four.
The club also had 3 Men’s Novice Coastal Scullers competing – Ben and Dan Sanderson and Bradley Whiting.
Ben had a very impressive race winning the section in a time of 20.49 with his brother Dan finishing in 5th place in a time of 20:43. Unfortunately the 3rd Ryde Sculler – Bradley Whiting had to withdraw from the race after a technical issue.
