Work has this week begun on the building of a new 3-lane roundabout, spine road and access road at the site of the new ASDA development in Newport.
Overnight the width of St George’s Way has been reduced as diggers move in to clear land and begin the build of what is one of the largest developments in Newport in recent years. It is certainly one of the most anticipated also, with Island residents keen to see the opening of ASDA’s first supermarket on the Isle of Wight.
The construction works, which are expected to last around 6 months, will take place in stages. The first phase, which is now underway, involves major earthworks moving from St George’s Way towards Pan Lane before the construction of the new highway link crossing Pan Lane.
The majority of work will be undertaken off the highway and, therefore, no significant disruption is anticipated on St George’s Way during the summer season.
Phase 2, to be started later in the year, will involve the construction of a roundabout on St George’s Way, together with improvements towards the St Georges Way/Medina Avenue roundabout, connection of Pan Lane to the new road and signalisation of the Shide junction. Pan Lane will also be closed for around 4 months to facilitate the work and details of necessary temporary traffic routing will be published when the Isle of Wight Council are able to confirm the start date on these elements.
The highway improvement works are anticipated to be completed early in 2017, when work on the actual ASDA store will then begin.
