Wight Tri has held the 3rd of their summer series Splash and Dash Events: the Gurnard Aquathlon.
This was a choice of either a 250 or a 600m swim, followed by 1 or 2 laps of a 2.5km run from Gurnard Sailing Club, turning at Egypt Point.
The weather conditions were not in the swimmers’ favour as they were met by a rough sea at Gurnard Sailing Club, but the hardy swimmers pushed through this to complete the swim.
1st in the nominated event was Chris Hughes, who completed the short course event in 17mins 20secs, 40 seconds inside his nominated time. 2nd was Craig Wilson, just 48s inside his 35 mins nomination for the long course, with Rob Doorly posting 35:13 for the long course – 1min 13s outside his time.
Fastest male was 15-year-old, Ben Van der Helstrate, who posted a fast swim time of 7mins 37secs and held off the more experienced triathlete and strong runner Chris Till to win in 28mins 38secs, with Chris just 7 seconds behind, posting the fastest run split of 18:10.
Lucy Doorly was the fastest female competitor on the long course in 36:13, with Beth Hughes and Alan Jones posting the fastest short course times of 19:45 and 16:35 respectively.
The next event is the Yaverland Aquabike on Friday the 11th August at 18:30, with the final event in the series – Gurnard Aquathlon 2 – taking place on Friday 25th August.
