A Charlie Smeeton hat trick helped Harwoods Div 1 West Wight record an emphatic victory over Hampshire Premier Whiteley Wanderers in the 2nd round of the Trophy at Camp Road on Saturday afternoon.
They say pride comes before a fall, and mainland side Whiteley Wanderers travelled across the Solent confident of victory against Island opposition. But it wasn’t to be.
It took just 30 seconds for captain and centre forward Gareth Bricknell to give West Wight the lead with a strike from close range (1-0).
Charlie Smeeton then put the Island side 2 goals to the good in the 8th minute (2-0) before striking the upright in the 12th.

Smeeton bagged his brace in the 25th minute after being put through by Ash Brett before beating the Whiteley Wanderers keeper in a 1-on-1 (3-0).
Veteran West Wight keeper Joe McCormack was forced to leave the field injured on the half hour mark to be replaced by manager Johnny Holmes, who made some fine (if unconventional) saves.
The final action of the 1st half saw Chris Elliot capitalise on a defensive error (4-0) to give the home side a 4-goal advantage at the half time interval.
Half time: West Wight 4-0 Whiteley Wanderers

It took until the hour mark for West Wight to score their 5th when Ash Brett converted a penalty after a Whiteley Wanderers player was adjudged to have handled the ball (5-0).
Chris Elliott then bagged his brace in the 71st minute with a strike from the middle of the penalty area (6-0).
Whiteley Wanderers were reduced to 10 men when 1 of their players was sinbinned. However, the mainland side never gave up and scored a consolation goal through Akeem Suleiman (6-1).
Charlie Smeeton got his hat trick goal with a great individual effort in the 76th minute (7-1).
Blake Reeves added an 8th for the home side with a close range strike a minute from full time (8-1).
Full time: West Wight 4-0 Whiteley Wanderers
West Wight: McCormack (Holmes), Phillips, Reeves, McFarlane, Brett, Jones, Burgess, Elliott, Bricknell, Daley, Smeeton
