East Cowes Vics remain top of the Hampshire Combination & Development League after trouncing Blackfield & Langley 0-9.
With manager Stuart Simmonds sat at Gatwick waiting to fly off to sunnier climes, the East Cowes Vics lads wanted to put in a display to make sure his holiday would start well. As early as the 3rd minute, Sam Kirby fed Jayden Yates who slid a slide rule pass to Dan Johnson who netted his first goal of the season (0-1).
B&L did have a good chance to equalise in the 9th minute when Andrew Barland found space on the edge of the area, and seeing Kayton Evans slightly off his line tried to lob him only to see the ball go just over the bar.
22 minutes had passed when Kirby picked up the ball some 30 yards out and went on a mazy run leaving four B&L players in his wake to slot home Vics’ 2nd (0-2).
After 30 minutes, Johnson was replaced by James Turner and within five minutes had increased the lead to 3 after some great build-up play involving Ollie Carey, Aidan Sheerin, Kirby, and Billy Backshall, who crossed for Turner to tap home (0-3).
B&L were completely shell-shocked by this start, and Brad Hines was booked for a tackle on Yates, then Yates nearly made it four, but saw his shot tipped away by keeper Craig Wilson.
Then, right on half time the Vics had a corner taken by Kirby and it was met with a bullet header from the week’s birthday boy Jake McNaney for his 4th of the season (0-4).
Half time: Blackfield & Langley 0-4 East Cowes Vics
Within two minutes of the restart, a pass from Kirby found Yates who found the back of the net to make it 0-5.
B&L then had a superb chance to get a goal back when they were gifted a penalty after 55 minutes. Justin assumed responsibility for the spot kick only to see it superbly saved by Evans down to his left-hand side.
After 64 minutes, it was Vics’ turn to earn a penalty after Johnson had been pushed in the back. Up stepped Yates to calmly dispatch the spot kick for 0-6.
With the game firmly out of their reach, B&L tried hard to not concede again but – in the last 10 mad minutes of the game – Vics added 3 more, first through Charlie Haward who ran on to a through ball to slot home (0-7), then 2mins later. Alfie Flux tapped home for the Vics’ eighth (0-8), and the scoring was complete when Turner tapped home his 2nd after some unselfish work from young Joe Calder (0-9).
B&L so nearly had the last word when a Shaun New shot seemed to be heading in until Evans again managed to get down to palm it away and complete another clean sheet for the Vics.
