In a season in which there have been fears that interest and enthusiasm for Isle of Wight football had waned, Ventnor FC have fielded their 1st-ever A Side.
The Ventnor 3rd-string side are returning football to the village of Wroxall with the help of the Parish Council.
The South Wight club now have 3 teams in Island football: Ventnor in Division 1, Ventnor Reserves in Combination 1 and Ventnor A in Combination 2.
Ventnor A team is a mix of experience and youth from the experience of Liam Mulholland returning from Niton FC to the youth of young 16-year-old Harry Croad.
In their 1st game against Wootton Res at Watcombe Bottom – played on a miserable evening of constant rain – Ventnor A were unlucky to lose 2-4 in an entertaining game to a hard-working Wootton side.
Ventnor opened the scoring through a Rueben Brown penalty before netting again in the 2nd half with a cross deflected into the Wootton goal. for their 2nd goal. However, 4 goals from the visitors put paid to hopes for a Ventnor A win in their opening game.
Ventnor manager Gary Gee says:
“Ventnor Combination 2 will be a tough league this year and we hope we can at least compete every week and bring on the youngsters through the club.”
