The Isle of Wight will welcome some of the world’s finest chess players later this month for the Wightlink Isle of Wight Chess Masters.
This event has already made its mark as one of the strongest tournaments in the UK, with over 130 top-level players competing in the Masters and more than 300 participants taking part throughout the week.
Among the elite competitors are Australia’s No.1 Grandmaster Bobby Cheng and England’s newest Grandmaster Ahmeet Ghasi, who will battle it out over 6 days at Ryde School starting on February 18th.
The tournament social spaces are open to the public from 16:00 on Tuesday 18th February, and Isle of Wight residents can attend for free. Spectators can watch the games unfold with live expert commentary on a large screen in the school theatre.
Alongside the tournament, visitors can explore a dedicated chess shop, offering books, trinkets, and equipment, as well as enjoy refreshments at the on-site café. There will be plenty of chess tables set up and coaches on hand to give tips.
