A new project is seeking the best free things to do on the Isle of Wight to feature on a leaflet and website.
From taking a trip on a vintage bus to exploring underwater wildlife on a family-friendly rockpool safari, we all have our favourite free things to see and do on the lovely Isle of Wight.
A new project run by Ryde-based design agency Pinkeye Graphics, supported by a Sustainable Transport Innovation Grant from the Isle of Wight Council, is collating the best free things to see and do under the banner ‘Free Wight’.
A website is already online and there will be a leaflet distributed across the Island in time for the 2020 season, and now is the chance to submit ideas for inclusion – at no cost.
Fabulous Free Wight suggestions include animal encounters and fascinating buildings, luscious landscapes and unusual transport. There are cultural gems like the free galleries at Quay Arts, plus the Independent Arts-run People’s Pop-up Gallery.
Cat James of Pinkeye Graphics said:
“Free Wight started as a bit of a laugh a few years ago on social media, and originated with The People’s Ride – alternatively known as Sainsbury’s travelator.
“However, from this little gem a big idea was formed, and people soon started submitting their own favourite free things to do on the Isle of Wight. One of my personal faves is looking in awe at the dinosaur footprints at Hanover Point.”

Free Wight is looking for suggestions big and little – from huge events like the Cowes Week sailfest, to smaller things with niche appeal, such as making a call from one of the country’s oldest working phone boxes (it’s in Bembridge).
Matthew Chatfield of Free Wight adds:
“To be included on the Free Wight website, you shouldn’t have to buy a ticket to see or do the free thing. We’ve included events such as the Island’s fabulous carnivals and parades.
“A thing has got to be worth seeing or doing – there are plenty of free things that are just dull. We aren’t interested in them.”
If you think you have something that needs to be added to the roll call, submit it via the Free Wight website or pop along to Quay Arts, Newport, drop in any time between 11:00 to 13:00 on Thursday 13th February 2020 and share your own free things to do and see.
The event is free, of course, and includes light refreshments.
Do NOT take part. This is ‘funded by the council’ and should you give them ANY information about something you or your family enjoy here that is ‘free’, then they will endeavour to find a way to make you pay, either directly or indirectly via more parking charges etc.
Council tax up 4% and with ALL these new houses being built, and services cut, just where is all this extra cash being ‘wasted’ not spent? Think, see these people for what they are.
