The Spyglass Inn at Ventnor is to close its doors on Monday due to the continuing coronavirus pandemic crisis.
In a statement, the Spyglass crew have said:
“It is with a heavy heart that we have taken the decision to close our doors as of Monday 23rd March due to the continuing crisis surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic. This is to ensure safety of our staff and customers alike.
“Please rest assured we will be back, hopefully sooner rather than later. It has been our absolute pleasure serving all our great customers past and present over the last 32 years and we look forward, with the support of our wonderful team, to serve you again in the future.
“This is not goodbye; this is see you again soon”.

Why close do take aways think of your staff
Why close? To keep the virus down and save lives.
It’s paramount that people understand these decisions are really taken with a heavy heart, overheads prohibit carrying on in this climate, as a fellow publican I totally understand and unfortunately have to agree with this move. Before everyone posts negative comments please remember what these people have invested and personally risked for years and years to give you some landmark inns and probably some great personal memories. The important thing is to ensure we are all are here healthily to enjoy those times again. This hopefully is a short term issue for us all to have to cope with but the important thing is as we start to appear from this abyss we all shop local buy local and support the local.
It is the right thing to do. To stay open in this climate with few locals and even fewer tourists would be foolhardy.
All pubs and food outlets should close, the Spyglass is a lovely pub in a great position. I would imagine the owners have invested much time and money, and now, wish to perhaps escape to somewhere safer until this misery ends in a year or two. Pointless to say open and watch all the investment you have made disappear, so when the carnage is finally over you cannot then afford to re open.
Good luck to the Spyglass owners and staff, and in such a lovely location, well run, and always popular I am sure future successes is assured.
