The Isle of Wight’s Slug and Lettuce pub in Newport High Street has had to close its doors following the partial collapse of a ceiling.

Patrons were asked to leave the building on Sunday afternoon when the bar structure failed, sending glasses smashing to the ground.

Electrical wiring and insulation has been left hanging down and contractors for the national chain now face a rush to get everything repaired and the pub back open for punters.

Caroline Adkins witnessed the incident. She has today (Monday) said:

“We were in the Slug and Lettuce in Newport yesterday afternoon around 2pm when the poor barmaid had the misfortune of being behind the bar when the entire ceiling, attached shelves, bottles, glasses and all came down.

“Despite clearly being shocked, she went into action mode making sure that all patrons were safe and unhurt and began contacting her managers”.

A statement on the company’s Facebook says:

“Unfortunately we have had a structural issue at site and have been forced to close. We will know more tomorrow in regards to how long we will be closed for. Apologies for any inconvenience caused”.
