Work to install a new, permanent replacement link bridge for Shanklin Cliff Lift is to begin this week, 2 years after the previous footbridge was condemned.
In March 2015 the cliff lift was shut to the public due to concerns about the condition of the footbridge, prompting a temporary structure to be erected. In March 2016 work began to upgrade the lift mechanism itself and the service fully reopened just in time for the Summer holidays in July 2016.
Now, work is about to get underway to remove the temporary bridge and install the permanent structure. As a result, between Monday 27th February and Tuesday 25th April Eastcliff Promenade will be closed to both pedestrians and traffic from it’s junction with Palmerston Road to a point 50 metres north.
The Isle of Wight Council have said that works will be dependent upon weather conditions, given the height of the bridge and wind impacts while working at the cliff edge.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has told Island Echo:
“The council is continuing to work with local businesses to ensure that the best possible service is delivered during this period of works.
“The replacement of the bridge will complete the extensive upgrade project that has taken place to ensure that the Shanklin cliff lift provides an effective and efficient service for users for years to come”.
Keeping to the previously advised timetable of works, the newly-created permanent link bridge is to be swung into place over the coming weeks, ensuring the service will be back to normal before the Summer season.
